Lafayette ChBE students are active in a diverse range of industrial and academic work.
Lafayette College offers EXCEL Scholar and Claire Booth Luce Research positions to students who want to remain on campus and work on research projects with professors. Generally eight to ten students conduct undergraduate research with chemical and biomolecular engineering professors each summer. A number of faculty also garner external support from funding agencies such as the National Science Foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the National Institute of Health and involve students in their work.
The National Science Foundation sponsors Research Experiences for Undergraduates, in which students work for a professor at a large university. Their travel, room, and board are covered along with a stipend. The students generally present their work at the end of the summer at the university and sometimes at the national AIChE conference. Recent sophomores and juniors have worked at Auburn University, Northwestern University, Penn State University, UCLA, and University of Maine at Orono.
Many companies come to campus and interview juniors and a few sophomores for paid internships during the summer. Recently, students have worked at Air Products and Chemicals, ABEC, Colgate Palmolive, ExxonMobil, FedChem LLC, Fragrance Manufacturing Inc., Linde, Merck & Co., and West Pharmaceutical.
